Te Whiu is a hapū of Ngāpuhi formed by the descendants of the eponymous ancestor Turou. Te Whiu traces our whakapapa to Kupe and the Matahourua waka, and the traditional whenua of Te Whiu resides within the Bay of Islands. Te Whiu hapū traces our whakapapa to Turou, the eponymous tūpuna of our hapū. With his wife Tumoana, Turou had three tamariki; Whaepapa, Tirarau and Punga. It is through these tamariki that all Te Whiu members can trace their ancestry. Our whakapapa is deeply rooted in our connections to these tūpuna and their living memories, in the landscape of the Bay of Islands and in our ancestral ties to our waka.
